Exchange workshop with local elected officials on the principles of democratic governance

On Thursday, December 15, 2022, the Senate organized, at King’s Conference Centre Hotel, in Bujumbura City, an exchange workshop with the members of the communal councils of Bubanza, Cibitoke, Bujumbura provinces and Bujumbura City under the theme: “The principles of democratic governance at the local level”.

The workshop was chaired by the Speaker of the Senate, Rt. Honourable Emmanuel Sinzohagera, and was also attended by the Deputy Speakers of the Senate, Honourables Dénise Ndadaye and Cyriaque Nshimirimana.

Opening the session, the Speaker of the Upper House of the Parliament indicated that this workshop is an opportunity to strengthen good governance in communes.

He also indicated that this meeting was organized in order to listen to the population’s challenges in order to help them find solutions.

“It is necessary to get to the bottom of a problem in order to be able to remedy it in a sustainable way,” he said.

At the end of these works, which had continued behind closed doors, the 2^nd Deputy Speaker of the Senate, Honourable Cyriaque Nshimirimana, at the same time Spokesman of this Institution, indicated that these consultations are going to be extended in all the country’s regions to collect the constraints observed in the communes and make a compilation of them.

He clarified that the latter will help the Senate to develop a new law on communal administration. Honorable Nshimirimana added that the collection of constraints will allow the Senate Institution to advise the President of the Republic and the National Assembly in order to improve the communal administration.
